Button, Cremini and Portobello Mushrooms Are The Same Mushroom. All of these mushrooms are the same species of mushroom, Agaricus bisporus. The only difference is their age. Button or white mushrooms, which are entirely white, are baby Agaricus bisporus. Cremini mushrooms, which have brown caps and no visible gills, are slightly older than button mushrooms. And portobellos, which are much larger, with flat brown caps and visible gills, are mature Agaricus bisporus.
